The school year is ending and summer break is quickly approaching. We all know what students usually do during summer break. But, what many students may not know is what teachers do during summer break. Do they go to another school for the summer because they miss teaching so much, or do they just try to enjoy their break from students? Here are some responses from teachers at OM.
Mr. Foy’s summer plans:
“My son is getting married at the beginning of the summer. Summer school starts in June and I’m going to start teaching English there. Being able to help kids and make them graduate is the best thing about it. I like teaching. If I didn't do this, I’d have to get a real job.”
Mr. Heaton’s summer plans:
“I’m going to Bethany Beach for a few days, I’m going to hang out with my kids a lot, go to Deep Creek for a week, I’m going to Nashville, I’m gonna exercise a little bit, and go to a concert too.”
Mr. de la Mar’s summer plans:
“I don’t have any really exciting plans for the summer, I am working. I don’t work for the public school system in the summer. I operate a summer camp, and I will be spending my days doing that.”
Ms. Nash’s summer plans:
“Just spend time with my family, get on a couple of road trips, attend some festivals, maybe take a trip back to Seattle, and basically spend time with my mama. Also, getting ready for the upcoming school year.”
Mr. Barham’s summer plans:
“My son is graduating from the United States Marines Officers Infantry School. I'm planning on going with him to Texas to get settled in and then to San Diego, where he’s going to be stationed for the first year. Other than that, just go to the pool every day, chill, have fun, spend time with my daughter who’s home for the summer, and that’s pretty much it.”
Mr. Felder’s (Sarge’s) summer plans:
“I’m traveling and I will be competing in tennis, and that’s it.”
Ms. Monk’s summer plans:
“I’m going to Anchorage, Alaska for an ultimate frisbee tournament against a bunch of Alaskan teams and some international teams. Then we’re going to go hiking, hopefully, go to Denali, see some cool stuff, and, hopefully, see the northern lights too.”
Ms. Gallant’s summer plans:
“So, I think I am doing summer school for the first part of the summer, and then after that, I’m going on a family vacation to the Outer Banks. At the very beginning of the summer we are celebrating my daughter's graduation from college, so we are going to go back to Ohio where I am from and have a party for her with the family.”
Ms. Dvornicky’s summer plans:
“This summer I am starting with a trip to the beach so I can do nothing for a week but sit and listen to the waves, feel the sunshine, and have a wonderful, relaxing time. Afterwards, I am going to Chicago to visit family, and then I am going to be working summer school at Howard High School. I’ll be teaching a math course to help students get ready for algebra. When that finishes, I’ll go back to Chicago to see family again, and then I’ll start all over again next year. That’s my summer.”
Ms. Brown-Fordham’s summer plans:
“I’m going to work on my novel. I have my outline done, my character backstories, and many rough drafts, so I am hoping that my first novel will be done since I am not teaching summer school.”
Mr. Loyola’s summer plans:
“So, basically all summer I will be working summer school at Howard High until the end of July. Then I plan on being in Mexico and in the Dominican Republic.”
Ms. Anderson-Little’s summer plans:
“My plans are having a baby and getting enough sleep because I am going to have a newborn screaming and crying. I also have a toddler at home who wants constant attention from me.”
Ms. Benson’s summer plans:
“I am going to Colorado for a surprise birthday party, and then from Colorado I’m flying to Spain. We are going to be in the South of Spain, my husband and I, and then we’re going to Cleveland to visit my cousins. Then, we’re headed to Scotland to go hiking, and then to Ireland for no good reason except for sounding cool, and then we’re flying back, just in time for next year of school.”
From these responses, we can see that teachers actually do have a very interesting normal life outside of school. It’s a relief knowing that during the summer they can do fun activities and can spend time with their family and friends. Hopefully, they will have a great summer and get ready for the next school year.
