Every Trick-Or-Treater Needs Good Treats!

Mayland’s most and least popular candies

With the annual arrival of the spookiest holiday of the year, the race to fill buckets, backpacks, and pillowcases with the greatest candy draws near. But what exactly is the best candy to hunt for? The majority of the population can agree that it is not candy corn, despite the striped triangle being a traditional Halloween treat. People have debated whether the greatest candy has nuts or no nuts, whether it’s a piece of chocolate, if it contains peanut butter, or even if it comes from this country! One’s circumstances heavily plays a role when determining this. If someone has braces, they probably would not vote for anything sticky and you would never catch someone with peanut allergies voting for Snickers anytime soon. The majority of the Maryland population voted that Hershey Kisses were the best, with candy corn and licorice being the worst. Candy corn just cannot catch a break!

The most popular chocolate in Maryland is milk chocolate with dark chocolate being a close runner up. Both face their criticisms, with milk chocolate being described as, “too sweet and containing high amounts of sugar,” while some have complained that dark chocolate possesses a taste similar to tar. White chocolate is by far the best, but some have described its taste to be identical to candle wax. Say what you want, but I am definitely hunting for cookie and cream bars this Halloween. It is like eating a softer form of oreos, which I love!

Despite the most popular candy being Hershey Kisses, Maryland itself is most known for Caramel Creams and Cow Tales! Caramel Creams were made in 1918, most commonly found in well known stores like Dollar Tree and Walmart. They can be recognized by their entirely brown exterior except for a single pool of white cream in the middle. Cow Tales were made in 1984, and are similar in appearance to Caramel Creams, only longer and thinner in size. In my opinion, they are pretty good and deserve a position in the top 10, but nothing will beat white chocolate!
