OM Renovation Update

Oakland Mills High School in Need of a Renovation

Last year, OM was scheduled to be renovated in 2026 because of various issues that are continuing to worsen. For example, door handles are falling off, mold has been found multiple times, and there is poor air quality due to an old HVAC system in the school. Despite this, the Board of Education voted to postpone the renovations to 2038. But even though that’s what was decided, it’s still possible to continue disputing this decision.

It is hard to come to a place and learn when you are so distracted from how hard it is to breathe in the air, or even just focus because you saw a mouse run across a classroom. It is also hard for teachers as well, since they come in here everyday to do their jobs. Mrs. Goldsmith, a math teacher here at OM, discussed many issues on why OM needs to have a renovation. “We need tools to develop and learn, projectors, white boards, etc,” Mrs. Goldsmith stated. “Often us teachers find that when we say something, it falls on deaf ears, but when students approach an issue or a difficult topic, it’s heard.” Even though OM’s renovations have been pushed back, it is still possible for students’ voices to be heard and potentially get sooner renovations for OM.
