Community Service for the Holidays

What you can do this holiday season to volunteer

The holidays are a time of much relaxation for some, but for others, it’s a time of great uncertainty with food and gifts often in short supply. The holiday season can be a great time to help your community while getting some service hours knocked out.
As you may know, Oakland Mills has a food pantry that typically serves over 100 families each month. The food pantry usually lasts between two to three hours and takes place on the first and last Wednesday of every month.

Delivering food throughout the holidays is important because many in Howard County rely on free or reduced school lunches to give them a meal for the day. When school is out and the weather is cold, a hot meal is something many go without.
It is also important to let everyone know the food pantry is not just for people who scrape by; anyone who needs a meal during the holidays is free to get one, so make sure to let everyone know about our amazing OM food pantry.
The NHS and AFJROTC help run these food pantries but are always looking for additional volunteers. If you’re interested in helping out, contact Chief Castellano or Mrs. Magrin. Our next distribution event is Wednesday, December 20, 2023, from 3:30-5:30 pm. Even if you can’t stick around to help with the event, financial and food donations are always welcomed!Outside of school, you can always explore options such as volunteering at retirement communities or soup kitchens. In addition, there are always organizations collecting gift donations for needy families during the holiday season.
So remember, if you need service hours or are just looking to give back to your community, consider volunteering this holiday season!
