2024 Senior Class Teacher of the Year

All about Mr. Foy

If you have ever spoken to Mr. Foy, you can be sure about one thing: he likes to engage in conversation. So, you can imagine our surprise when “I am speechless” was the only way Mr. Foy could describe how he felt when students and staff walked into his classroom to tell him that he won the Class of 2024’s Senior Teacher of the Year.

Every year in Howard County, Seniors vote for a favorite teacher they feel deserves appreciation. The teacher of the year winners from each high school are all invited to a celebration at the HCPSS Central Office in honor of their contributions.

For Oakland Mills, that teacher is the quick-witted, humorous, and always lively, Mr. Foy. Mr. Foy has been a Scorp for over 20 years, and this is not the first time he’s been honored as the Senior Class Teacher of the Year.

All of his experiences have led us to have the phenomenal educator we have today. One that promotes creativity in all his students and allows us to explore different areas and methods of writing. One that sees just as people with real emotions and responsibilities, trying to navigate through life, and not just children roaming the halls through high school. One that encourages us to pursue something we enjoy and brings out the best in us. One that works to better his students and does not give up on them, when he sees they have already given up on themselves. One that we can appreciate the most at Oakland Mills and what he has done for our community, as a teacher, a co-worker, and a friend.

Mr. Foy would not change being our teacher for the world. “I just like teaching, I like working with people, I like trying to help people, I like learning from people,” he said. This last part confused me, so I asked him, “You learn from us?”  The answer he gave couldn’t have been more thoughtful. “Always, always. That’s why a lot of time if I’m saying something and I stop and look like I’m thinking that is because I am thinking, it means somebody said something that is completely out of my ballpark, and I have something to learn. You guys give me something to think about.”
