Why Fall Events Matter to Students

It is officially the most wonderful time of the year! Not Christmas, not Thanksgiving, but high school football season. The energy is high, the school spirit is outstanding, and the vibes are unmatched. Nothing beats the student section during a high-stakes game, where the Scorps come out on top. From the games, to the pep rally, to the dance, and all the fall festivities this is truly the highlight of the year for many students–and here’s why.

Pep rallies energize the school! They bring the entire student body together to show off their school pride. Our performers such as the cheerleaders, marching band, and poms team help to get the crowd hype. The games and competitions between the grades create an electric energy throughout the stands. For many, the pep rally is a highlight. Senior Jayla Mapson shared, “I love when everyone comes together, and we have so much fun as we watch all the different performances and activities. It makes everything so exciting.” The crowd favorite? Games like the races we’ve had in the past and, most recently pieing staff members have made these rallies even more memorable. But while it might be one of the biggest events, it is only the beginning of the fall celebrations.

Homecoming isn’t just a dance; it’s a week-long celebration that unites the school from spirit week to the big game to the dance at the end. Homecoming might be the most anticipated event of the season. When asked about the best thing to do to create the ultimate school spirit, many students overwhelmingly responded: participate, be loud, be on theme, and cheer on the team! Embracing the spirit and bringing the energy to the festivities is what makes these moments so special.

Beyond the fun, these fall traditions create lasting memories and bring the student body closer in unexpected ways. It helps promote a sense of belonging within the community, as well as create memories that students will carry beyond high school. 12th-grade assistant principal Mrs. Phillips emphasizes, “It reinforces our motto that we are strongest together. It lets kids have a good time, it lets staff have a great time, and when everybody participates it just adds to the energy.” As we show our pride as a team and as individuals, it clearly demonstrates just how much Oakland Mills values community.
