How to Do a Fade

Tips From a Pro

Tired of having to find a ride or drive to a barbershop to get a haircut and spending $30-$50? Well, here’s a tutorial on how to do a fade haircut step-by-step. The tools needed for this tutorial are: Clippers – I highly recommend the 5-star Wahl clippers, available on the Walmart or Amazon website.

Trimmers- I recommend the Wahl cordless detailer, also from a Walmart or Amazon website

*Be sure to brush the hairs down after every step for the perfect fade.*

Step 1. Grab your trimmers and set your guideline.

Note: To make sure you set your guideline, it should be about a finger’s width long.

Step 2. Set your clippers lever all the way up and set your second guideline by going up half an inch from your first guideline.

Note: Use your clippers lever all the way down and flick the bottom of your guideline.

Step 3. Put your #1 or #2 (depending on how much hair is there) guard on your clippers and flick about an inch up.

Note: same step for whatever fade you’re doing, just remember that the key is to go from high to low with your guards. EX: #2–> #½

Step 4. Next, put your #½ guard on your clippers and flick up about a half inch from your #1 guideline.

Step 5. Next, grab your #1 1/2 guard and put your lever all the way up and flick from the end of your #1 guideline.

Step 6. DETAILING! For detailing, you can use a #1 guard and use the corner of your clipper to blend it better, or you can do the same with your ½ guard. And voila!

Be sure to clean your clippers with Clippercide after every use!

Cutting a fade at home takes patience, practice, and the right tools, but it’s a skill worth learning. Not only can it save you money on trips to the barber, but it also gives you the freedom to keep your style fresh whenever you want. Your first few tries might not come out perfect, but each cut will get easier as you build confidence and improve your technique. In the end, a clean fade is more than just a haircut, it’s proof that with effort and practice, you can take control of your own style.
