Attempting to Return to States
The Oakland Mills High School Girls Varsity Basketball team had an exceptional season last year, winning the Howard County Championship and advancing to the State Finals for the first time in 27 years. Despite losing to South River in the final game, that season was a great success. They are attempting to relive that this season and hope to finish the job this time by winning it all.
Last year, this Oakland Mills team, led by Coach Coughlan, won 17 consecutive games in the county, after losing to Howard in their first game of the year and their only additional loss to Mt. Zion Preparatory Academy. The girls rounded out their regular season with a 17-2 record.
When talking about this year, there is much to look forward to, as they only graduated three seniors last year, and their JV went 11-5-1 last season. They have lots of young talent coming to varsity, but despite their promising future, losing three of their seniors is a big loss for the Scorps. Destiny Macharia and Heaven Alexander were captains of the team and major contributors to the team’s success. When asked about the loss of the graduated senior girls, Coughlan said, “I want to shout out those three for paving the way. I told them that they’re the cause of next year’s…success because they carved it out for the younger girls.” After making the finals last year, it is clear that the team’s goal is to win it all this year.
So far, this season is off to a great start. They are 4-1, and Chloe Grenway officially hit 1000 points on December 15th. They hope to continue this hot streak throughout the regular season and beyond.
