Both the Boys and the Girls are on the Rise
The Oakland Mills Basketball teams have had great success this winter season. This year, the boys’ basketball team has grown into a real powerhouse, going 15-1 and starting the season 9-0. Their one loss was Atholton, as OM caught the flu and they had multiple key players out, including Junior Caleb Redd, who is leading Howard County in rebounds and is 11th in the state in the same stat, per MaxPreps. Junior Daniel Ndritu, a returning player, believes the reason this year’s team has been so successful is because “… we got a lot better and our chemistry could win us a lot more games.” This belief is echoed by Coach Harmon, who stated, “They have a lot more experience, so that guided us to more wins this year.”
With all this success, the Varsity team has the goal of making a playoff push and maybe even making the state championship game, but only time will tell. The boys have an upcoming game against Patterson High School on February 18th at 5:30 pm.
The OM Girls Varsity Basketball team, coached by Coach Coughlan, has also had a great start to the season. After ending their 23-24 season with a 15-7 record, the team advanced to the regional finals before losing to River Hill High School. They then went 21-2 the following year and made it all the way to the State Finals. This was the first time a Oakland Mills Girls Basketball team made the Maryland State Finals in 27 years! The team looks to repeat that success and make it even further this year. They are led by Senior Chloe Grenway, who believes they can win the state championship for OM. As of right now, the Girls are currently 12-4 and look to be the Howard County champs for a consecutive year.
Overall, both the OM Varsity teams have been very successful. Both are young teams with a lot of potential, and we look forward to seeing both teams grow. But for right now, both have their sights on a State Championship, which seems in reach for both teams.
