Girls Lacrosse: Back in Action

    As the spring season begins the Oakland Mills High School girls lacrosse team look to make this season fantastic.    

     Their first game of the season was against the Atholton Raiders one of the toughest teams in the county, on March 22. When asked about the matches the team is scheduled to play, coach Davia Procida replied that, “Every team we play will be tough, as there really are no ‘gimme’ games in our county. With being a new coach and also playing teams we have never played before, I am looking forward to every game!” The game was at the Mill so they had home field advantage. With five seniors and three juniors and a majority of underclassmen, the team had a fight on their hands. After a long game the Raiders won with a final score of 17-0.

       The team members truly care for the sport. Junior Leah Roberts said, “There are so many reasons I like lacrosse. I like being a part of a team where you’re counted on and encouraged to be the best you can be.” Morgan Carroll one of the seniors who has played for four years on the team had this to say about the sport: “Lacrosse is a great sport that helps me be active, and I get to see my friends both old and new.”

     The team has some veterans returning, as well as some new members, including the new head coach, Davia Procida. Procida, according to the Baltimore Sun, played on the Israeli national lacrosse team for the 2013 Federation of International Lacrosse Women’s World Cup Tournament in July, she is also a teacher at Oakland Mills Middle School. When asked what her goals for the Oakland Mills team, she responded with the a worthy goal: “To improve every day, and our plan to achieve this was on the first day of the season, every player and coach made a commitment to come to practice each day ready to learn and get better. We have a lot of new players and great returning leaders who continue to guide our team in the right direction. As I coach, I know I will come to practice ready to teach and help the players be successful in any way I can.”

  Come out and support the ladies in orange as they hope to take continue their strong momentum and down their opponents one by one.
