A look inside the life of our favorite track coach
To say the Oakland Mills track team has been dominant over the past few seasons would be an understatement, with multiple state championships in boys and girls indoor and outdoor track. With many athletes and coaches contributing to this success, one man has had a larger impact than anyone else, coach Brewington.
Coach Brewington himself was very fast in high school, having earned himself records in Track and Field at his school of Howard (one of which was recently shattered by his own runners here at OM). He knew from that age that he wanted to pass along his knowledge in teaching, and what better place than his very own sport of Track and Field. He himself was inspired by his high school track coach, stating “He really helped me see that Track was something that could take me somewhere.” Now he’s trying to do the same, with numerous Oakland Mills track athletes receiving athletic scholarships over the past couple seasons, he is helping them go somewhere.
The Oakland Mills Track team has been very successful under Brewington, with the boys Track team alone having won state championships repeatedly over the last couple years, including, twice in 2020, twice in 2021, and twice in 2022, as they just won the indoor and outdoor T&F State Championship as well. The girls track team has also been dominant, with state championship titles last spring, this spring, and this winter. And all that winning did not just stop at state championships, with many scorpions even competing at a national level at the New Balance Nationals competitions, and placing with top times.
With all the triumph over the past couple of seasons for coach Brewington and the Scorps, it comes to no surprise that he has been offered coaching jobs in various positions, including college coaching positions, and yet, he remains with the team. “I love Oakland Mills. What I want to do is help the team make an impact on our community,” he says about the school, “I just bought a house down the street, my kids are going to go here, I am all in here.”
One thing that sets coach Brewington and his coaching staff apart from the rest is preparation. It is obvious that this kind of success does not come with just dumb luck, the track coach is always preparing for the future. “We have our guys now, but [me and coach Gonzalez] are always looking two steps ahead… and that’s what keeps us going”. And it is safe to say this method is working, as it seems as though this team just does not slow down, literally.
When he is not watching his athletes on the track, he is watching his kids at home. His whole life does not revolve around the sport, as he also has a family life as well. With his two young children, whom he often brings by practice and who are a big hit among the athletes, he has a strong family life as well.
We are very lucky to have a coach like coach Brewington here at OM, so make sure you give a congrats when you see him around.
