Meet one of OM’s Counselors, Mr. Quinn.

Being able to help students through tough times – whether academic or personal – is what makes being a counselor so great. That’s what Mr. Quinn loves most about his job here at Oakland Mills High School.

After graduating from Towson University with a business degree and Loyola University with a counseling degree, Mr. Quinn started working at OM because he “loved high school” and “enjoyed education.” The way he discovered Oakland Mills is a funny story. Counseling jobs are difficult to come by given that there are only four in each school. But, to his surprise, Quinn’s neighbor was a GT teacher at OM at the time. When he asked if he could apply, just a few days later, he was being bombarded with phone calls from Oakland Mills High.

Mr. Quinn has been at OM for 16 years, and has been a counselor for 26. When asked what he loved the most about being a school counselor, he replied, “Just being able to help people.” It’s his favorite part of his job, along with the staff and students. If he ever retired from being a school counselor, he’d still continue to work with students in some way.

He is a father of three, and wanted to become a counselor so it could fit into his schedule and he could spend more time with his kids. Outside of school, he says that he enjoys watching and playing sports with his family. He would definitely let his children apply at Oakland Mills if they weren’t already adults in college, however, he wouldn’t counsel them. “I already know everything about them!” which makes sense.

He’s been here ever since. Thank you, Mr. Quinn.
