The Importance of Black History Month

Why We Celebrate Each February

Black History Month is an important month for all Americans to celebrate and remember. Celebrated every February in the United States, Canada, and the UK, the month honors the achievements, struggles, and contributions of Black people throughout history. It’s a special reminder each year of the major impacts the Black community has had all over the world.

Black people’s achievements and stories have historically been ignored or overlooked by the mainstream media and history books. Black History Month addresses the struggles and disadvantages that African Americans have gone through to achieve equality. This time usually highlights key historical figures such as Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, and so many others who have helped the Black community on the road to equality.

Black History Month is important for us to recognize and celebrate because representation and recognition matter. The month highlights and reminds society about all of the contributions and achievements that Black people have accomplished over the years and helps us reflect on how far the Black community has come.

Oakland Mills will be celebrating the month with two school-wide assemblies on February 27, 2025. Sophomores and seniors will attend the first assembly during 2nd period, and freshmen and juniors will attend the second performance during 5th period. Each year, this can’t-miss show is an awesome display of OM pride, talent, and appreciation.

Our BSU (Black Student Union) is also hosting a Black History Month T-shirt fundraiser. All proceeds will support BSU student activities. The first 75 purchasers will have their shirts available for pickup before the Black History Assembly. An additional order will be placed after the assembly for orders beyond the first 75 and will be available for pickup once the second order arrives. Please see Mr. Ringgold or Ms. Epps in the front office if you would like to support the fundraiser.
