Track State Champions

A Year To Remember

The Oakland Mills Track Team had another phenomenal year, winning the State Championship for the 2025 spring athletic season. This is their fourth state win in the last five school years, and winning has become the new normal for Oakland Mills Track.

This past title will add to one of Brewington’s many state titles in his illustrious career as the Oakland Mills Track Coach. When asked about what it takes to run for OM, Brewington said, “The goal is to win a state title every year, if you come in here to seriously run… You’re expected to compete for a state title.”

In recent years, both the boys’ and girls’ teams have dominated the state in track and field. In two of the last three years, both teams swept the Maryland Track State Championships. This year was very exciting when the girls’ state championship came down to the last 4×4 race. The event included two sophomores: Kayla Robinson and Jordyn Harriston, and two freshmen: Payton Buchanan and Rozelyn Sarfo. The team placed second in that race, which put them ahead of Howard 70-69, winning the girls state title. When asked about how she felt before the race, Buchanan responded, “I didn’t even know we had to place second to win states, so when we [the girls 4×4] figured out we won…, it was a very cool moment.”

Brewington is confident that they can win states again next year, even after losing many core seniors, such as Gabriel Murray. Murray was one of the top runners in many events, including being the fastest hurdler in all of Maryland Track and Field. Brewington says, “We lose people every year, and people think we are going to lose, but we always find a way to win, so I’m not worried.”

It was very exciting to watch our dominant track team soar past the competition this year, and we all have high hopes for next year’s team. We hope for the best for the 25-26 season, and congratulations to both the girls and boys team on this year’s success.
