Happy Halloween, OM! Today’s holiday is dedicated to dressing up in crappy costumes and going to strangers’ doorsteps for candy. As much as people love Halloween, most don’t want to spend their money on cheap decorations that last only one night. However, an easy and quick solution lies in a ball of yarn and a crochet hook.
For this project, we’ll be crocheting a bat. What you’re going to need is yarn (it can be any color or width you want), a crochet hook (5.0 MM), scissors, and a needle if you desire to weave loose yarn into your work. Now that you have your tools, it’s time to get to work!
First, begin by making the bat’s body, chain (ch) four. Then you need to slip stitch (sl st, guide is at the bottom) into the first chain to create a ring, or “magic ring.” There are many ways to make a ring, but this is just an alternative method to do so. After making your ring, you will need to put eleven double crochets (dc) into the ring, and sl st to join, in turn creating a circle. By the way, make sure to pull the yarn apart so you can see stitches. Now, onto the ears. Chain two and put one dc into the same stitch, then create a picot stitch to make one ear by chaining three and slip stitching into the first chain. Into the next stitch, work two dc and make another picot stitch to create the other ear. Now dc, half double crochet (hdc), and sl st all into the same stitch.
Onto the wings, chain twelve. Yes, it sounds tedious, but it will all make sense. After chaining twelve, sl st into the second chain from the hook, and put one half double crochet into the next three stitches. Continuing, put one single stitch (sc) into the next two stitches, skip two stitches, place sc into the last stitches, and slip stitch into the body of the bat. Chain one, turn your work, skip a stitch, sc into the next three stitches, skip a stitch, and put a single crochet into the last three stitches. This part is to create the bottom of the bat wing. Turn your work again and chain one. Slip stitch in the next two stitches and place one single crochet into the next stitch. Skip a stitch, single crotch into the next, and chain two. With your hook, slip stitch into the first chain, single crotch into the next stitch, and slip stitch into the body of the bat.
To make the other wing, we’ll need to sc into the next three stitches, chain one, single crochet into the last three, and sl st in order to move to the other side. Turn your work and repeat the same steps for this wing, and you’re done! Thank you for reading this tutorial, and happy crocheting!
