OM Students Share Their Plans for 2026
New Year’s is when people often reflect, sign up for a gym membership they’re never going to use, and look to future goals. Here are some plans and New Year’s resolutions of OM students.

Maya Coull
“My theme song would either be ‘Amber’ by 311 or ‘Figure.09’ by Linkin Park.” Maya is a Sophomore and her New Year’s resolution is to get good grades and continue to improve in soccer since she is dedicated to her role on the girls soccer team. For college, she wants to major in biology and most likely eventually go to medical school. “I see myself working hard to achieve my goals, which are to work in healthcare and earn a good income to support my family and future kids.” Grey’s Anatomy is the vibe she feels her future would give off if it were a TV show, and like Miranda Bailey from the show, she pictures herself with her high school sweetheart, Antonio, and kids she would “do anything for.”

Emi Somolinski
Theme song: “Things That Rhyme With Orange” by I Set My Friends On Fire
Emi, the cool goth senior of the hallways, hopes to learn skateboard tricks “instead of just riding around on it” for New Year’s. After high school, Emi is set on going to Towson for their five year art education program and wants to eventually become a high school art teacher. In the future, they see themselves as child-free-avid-traveler-adult with a cat, cool hair, and a decently sized apartment. In the future, Emi also hopes to serve her community by providing food for them via a community garden they’d like to start.

Mariyam Walker
“My theme song would be ‘Pain’ by Pinkpantheress.” Mariyam is a junior and has their eyes on the prize: Pratt Institute of Art. Mariyam is working to overcome her procrastination and continues to try to create art almost every day. She hopes to continue to work hard in the new year to someday reach the prestigious institution of interest. In the future, she imagines herself creating different forms of art, maybe even creating a film or two. The picturesque comedy Ferris Bueller is the film she’d like to mimic both in her life and art. She finds the optimism, cinematography, and use of color inspiring.

Evelyn ElkaneEvelyn
Currently a junior, she plans to attend a good medical college in either Maryland or Texas to become a pediatrician. Evelyn loves being around kids and helping them in any way they can, so being a pediatrician is a job that she figures can achieve both. Health and happiness are two things that are non-negotiable to Evelyn, and part of that is living an adventurous and hobby-filled lifestyle once she has the freedom to do so in her adulthood. “When I picture the future, I see a big, beautiful family of my own. A hospital and a house that I own. My parents live peacefully and happily as well, and because of me, they no longer have to work. I see smiles and all my loved ones, friends, and family are all together.” Evelyn is very ambitious. She describes her ideal life in short as “the same as the TV show Good Luck Charlie,” a show where a big, happy, and goofy family navigates their life together. For now, Evelyn’s short-term goal is to narrow down their long list of colleges she wants to apply to and organize academic goals that will get her to a Disney show future.

Marleigh Amate
“If I could be any theme song I would be ‘Good Old Days’ by Macklemore and Kesha. I personally love this song because it captures growth so perfectly and how change can feel like such a good but also scary thing at the same time. This song just truly reminds me that I only will experience each moment once and should just do my best to make the most of it. Living life without any regret is my goal in life and this song is my reminder.” Marleigh, a warm senior, wishes to go somewhere even warmer for college in hopes of working in the music industry, specifically the marketing aspects of it. “I truly feel a deep connection to music and would love to work in concerts.” Marleigh is looking at FAU, U Miami, Temple, Fordham, and University of Hawaii. Marleigh says that the movie that captures what she imagines for the future is The F1 Movie, which came out this past summer. “I feel like the movie embodies my dream lifestyle with all the risk-taking and winning.”

Yassiell Marin
“’Cancion del Mariachi’ by Antonio Banderas. It is a very fast upbeat song and the song has a lot of flair and confidence in it.”
Junior Yassiell relishes a challenge and plans to go into engineering in college at a local university. Though his plans aren’t grand, the junior doesn’t need much to be happy and hopes to live a life like the old man in Up, wife, kids, surrounded by nature, pets, no distractions. To him the movie reflects a motto of his as well, “you have to live life at your own pace and personal growth”.
More urgently, Yassiell plans for this new years is to start practicing less screen time to limit distractions and focus on the important things ahead.

Dave Roberts
“Things Can Only Get Better by Howard Jones, it really embodies the spirit of continuing to attempt great things in spite of risks and fears, while still being conscious of those risks.”
The academic Dave Roberts has his eyes on the prize, hopeful to make big bucks in the aerospace engineering field. University of Maryland, Virginia Tech, CU Boulder, and University of North Dakota are a few of the colleges Dave has applied for and is anticipating the University of Maryland acceptance letter the most. “I hope to have a future like my current setup, a relatively peaceful life, with enough shenanigans to keep things from getting boring. I’m not exactly one to go to parties, but I do enjoy hanging out with people, so probably some social events or interest clubs.”
Though Dave wants the typical house, car, family centered future he also hopes to go to the moon and probably will if he submits enough research papers. To keep to his personal theme, Dave’s favorite movie is the Martian and says that the themes within the film likely will mimic his future.

Kai Brooks
“Thick of it by KSI”Junior Kai Brooks is known for his place on the football team but career wise he wants to go in the opposite direction, from act first think later to licensed therapist. For college the junior wants to stay local to Maryland and has his eyes on Towson since he likes the facilities. Kai’s focus for the future is staying healthy because to him it’s the key to a long life. Additionally he wants wife and kids, and since he sees himself as the peter parker type his new years resolution is to reflect the marvel character’s heroic kindness.“My new years resolution is to be a better person because being a good person is the most important thing you can do”
