A Preview into This Year’s Season

At Oakland Mills, many teams in the winter season are known for their competitiveness and impressive records.

OM’s basketball teams have always been known for putting up great fights; win or lose, they never go down without trying. This year’s varsity boys’ team, consisting of notable players Hayes Bishop, Caleb Redd, Jayden Claderon, and Daniel Ndiritu, is off to a dominant start with an undefeated record so far. The varsity girls are coming off a state championship appearance last year and are on track to perhaps make another appearance this year. They are also off to a fantastic start to the season with a 4-1 record so far.

The OM varsity cheerleading team, coached by English teachers Ms. Moore and Ms. Veltre, has steadily gotten better and better over the past four years. Just last season, the girls took second place in the county championship, only one point behind first. Most athletes stayed with the team for the winter season, so we’re hoping they can keep up the momentum and take the top spot for the winter.

Our wrestling team, coached by Mr. Howell, is known for its strength, with four state titles to its name. The team is looking quite promising this year and is expected to go far this season. Notably, Senior Raul Rodriguez got his 100th win in wrestling this season, an accomplishment that not many athletes achieve.

And last but certainly not least, the track and field team is coming back looking just as strong as ever with a countless number of state titles. They are looking to take home yet another title this season, led by coaches Mr. Brewington, the head sprint coach, and Mr. Loyola, the head distance coach. We wish all of our winter sports teams luck this season; we can’t wait to see all they will accomplish. Go Scorps!
