A Cultural Phenomenon
What were the first two chronicle numbers that came after five, which became a viral worldwide reference? The phrase 6-7 came from the song “Doot Doot” By Skrilla with the famous verse “Bro put belt ring to they behind, the way that switch brrt I know he dyin … .67”. Once the song dropped, the meme just spiralled mostly due to edits on TikTok using the sound to describe NBA basketball star Lamelo Ball and how he is 6 ‘7 feet tall. The high school basketball player named TK Kinney was one of the first people to tie the juggling hand movement to the saying 6-7; he would continuously say 6-7 in TikToks and interviews. The main spread of the saying was due to TikTok and the younger audience taking it by storm.
As the phrase became more popular, people started to make it its own type of joke; Oakland Mills seemed to have their own take on it, too. When asked about the viral saying, 15 OM students said it was annoying, 7 said it was funny, and 2 said they were neutral on it, explaining that “it’s just played out” and that it depends on the use of it. An experiment was conducted where people were asked to say “1 2 3 4 5 …” waiting to see what people would say next. 14 people said 6-7 in the meme way, and 12 people said 6-7 in a normal tone or just continued the numbers after 5 until 10.
Overall, regardless of it seeming annoying or repetitive, it showed how much one song and one statement could change the world and become a cultural phenomenon. H6ppy Va7entines Day!
