Puffs!

A Preview of OM’s Fall Play

On November 12th, 13th, and 14th, some of our talented peers will be presenting this year’s fall play: Puffs! Our theater teacher, Ms. Hoffen, chose and directed Puffs, a play inspired by the Harry Potter franchise, originally written by J.K. Rowling. Puffs follows a similar plotline to the original story, but spotlights the Hogwarts house “Hufflepuff.” It’s meant to be comedic, different from previous OM performances, and specifically for Harry Potter fans, new and old.

“Even if you don’t really know Harry Potter, the story is really strong…” Ms. Hoffen shared. This production strives to be inclusive of everyone. While fans may recognize some familiar ideas and references, the story and comedy can still entertain people who are completely new to the magical world.

One thing that makes Puffs different is its focus. In Harry Potter, most of the attention is on Harry and the other main characters, while Puffs gives another group of students a chance to tell their story. Instead of focusing only on the heroes everyone already knows, the play follows characters who might normally be in the background. This plot creates a different perspective on a familiar story, while giving the cast plenty of opportunities to make the audience laugh and feel included. A couple of cast members, sophomores Layla Capers and Abby Yang, also spoke about Puffs. “… it’s going to be chaotic! People are going to be running and screaming, falling over, and just being silly. The point is for the audience to have just as much fun as the cast members.”

From their description, the audience can expect a high-energy performance. The show includes movement, comedy, exaggerated reactions, and plenty of craziness throughout. The energy is part of what makes the play exciting for the students performing it, and just as entertaining for the people watching. The cast members aren’t the only students helping bring the production together, though. Other students on the production crew are excited, spreading the word, and putting their full effort into the show. Students work behind the scenes on costumes, props, sets, lighting, sound, and making sure everything runs smoothly when the curtain opens.

Productions like Puffs are also an opportunity to support our fellow students. The cast and crew have spent time rehearsing, preparing, and working together to create something that the school community can enjoy. Going to the play isn’t only about seeing a performance; it’s a chance to support classmates who have worked hard to put it together. Whether you’re already a Harry Potter fan, interested in theater, looking for something fun to do, or just want to support your peers, Puffs has something to offer. “Somebody will get something from every scene.” Ms. Hoffen said.

The show will run at 7:00 pm on November 12th-14th, and there will be a 2:00 pm matinee showing on November 14th. Tickets can be purchased at hcpss.booktix.com. Get your tickets now so you don’t miss out on a magical experience!
