“The Mitchells vs. the Machines” is a new movie that just came out on Netflix. I heard about this movie through the app Tik Tok. It’s gotten a lot of buzz due to the fact that one of the main characters, Katie, is openly lesbian. This was a shock to people because there aren’t always roles that represent members of the LGBTQ+ community in movies. 

Before watching this movie, I thought that it was great that the writers made one of the characters lesbian because it sends the message to younger kids that you can love whomever you want despite their appearance or society’s expectation. Especially because this is a cartoon, I think that it was bold of the writers to make this decision because some parents might be hesitant to show this movie to their children, even though it comes with only a PG rating. It’s interesting though because Katie’s sexuality is not a major plot element in the film, it’s merely a fact about her.

The movie is about the Mitchell family. The oldest daughter, Katie, is headed off to college, and the family decides to drive her there for one last family road trip. During the road trip, the kids are always on their technology, but conflict occurs when machines (futuristic robots) attempt to take over the world. The movie follows the Mitchell family’s attempt to stop the robots and save society.

After watching “The Mitchells vs. the Machines,” I would rate this movie an 8/10. I liked the animations and the concept of the movie. I think that the animations are really colorful, which is perfect for kids. The animation has great sound effects that match the movie well. The movie was also pretty funny; the jokes are so corny that you can’t help but laugh. This movie is really modern and its characters are diverse. I think the fact that the movie highlights different flaws that we all have as people is awesome. It gets kids to see that it’s okay to feel different sometimes. For example, Katie often feels like she doesn’t really fit in with other people or that no one really gets her. I would recommend this movie because it’s really entertaining and fun, and it will make you feel happy after watching it.
