The Turning Point in WWII

In 1944, D-Day occurred when the United States joined World War II, following the Allied invasion of Normandy in northern France. At that time, France was under the control of Nazi forces during the war. Interestingly, the invasion was initially set for June 5th, but was postponed to June 6th due to unfavorable weather conditions. More than 150,000 young soldiers from Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom landed on the beaches of Normandy, driving the Nazi soldiers westward across Europe. This invasion marked a pivotal moment in World War II, and D-Day stands as a tribute to the sacrifices made by the soldiers.

Normandy American Cemetery 

Today (June 6th), a significant ceremony is held in France to honor the bravery and sacrifice of American service members and their Allies during World War II. This event, organized by the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC), serves as a reminder of the courageous actions taken on D-Day. The ceremony is open to the public and begins promptly at 11:00 a.m., allowing attendees to gather and reflect on this historical moment. The event is to last approximately one hour, featuring speeches, commemorative activities, and the laying of wreaths to pay tribute to those who fought for freedom. 

National Mall, Washington, D.C.

A rally and concert are taking place at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., to honor D-Day, featuring a complimentary concert at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial. This event takes place at the National Mall, just north of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, where 6th Street intersects the Mall.

D-Day Parade in France 

A memorial parade and ceremony are held to honor the soldiers of World War II. For those who are currently in France or have made the journey, a tour is scheduled from June 3rd to June 10th. Participants can look forward to breakfast, a musical salute, and the Concert De Libération as part of the event.

Alexandria Commemorate in VA

Two important events occurred in the lead-up to D-Day. The first is the 15th Annual D-Day Commemoration, which occurred on June 1st, where attendees gathered to honor and remember the sacrifices made during this crucial moment in history. Following that, on June 5th, a thought-provoking lecture was held at The Lyceum in the Alexandria History Museum. This lecture discussed the historical significance of D-Day, exploring its impact and legacy through insightful discussions and engaging presentations. 

It is important to honor and remember this significant event, as it pays tribute to the sacrifices of veterans. It acknowledges their efforts that allowed the Allied forces to regain control of the Western Front, which ultimately changed the course of the war.
