On Sunday, November the 25th, The First Lady, Melania Trump, and the President, Donald Trump, hosted a Halloween social event at the White House. Located on the South Lawn, school children and the families of our military and front line workers made their way through a path of Halloween decorations, candy stations, and fun activities.
Covid-19 precautions were put into place to keep the event as safe as possible for the hundreds of people gathered at the White House. Masks, proper social distancing, and hand sanitizing were required for the families who were trick or treating.
The staff members were also required to wear masks and keep their distance, with the added responsibility of wearing gloves while handing out candy. President Trump and the First Lady stood on the steps of the White House and did not engage in contact with any of the guests at the event.
A normally shorter event, this Halloween celebration had a different approach to it. Along with following CDC guidelines, the event also limited the number of guests and extended the event to four hours, running from 3:30pm to 7:30pm.
Along the walk of the South Lawn, not only were there different staff members handing out candy, but there were also activities that the children and families could participate in. According to the White House “The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will have space-related items for kids to observe, as well as a display of an inflatable rocket. Children will be able to wave hello to Smokey the Bear from the Department of Agriculture and stop by the Department of Interior station for a Junior Ranger badge and paper ranger hat. The Department of Labor and the Department of Education will both offer fun photo opportunities with backdrops specific to their agencies. The Department of Transportation will have model rockets on display and paper airplanes available for children to take home.”
