It’s really good!
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a show based on the game Cyberpunk 2077. Despite being years after the game’s original release, this show has surprisingly proven to be a great addition to the Cyberpunk 2077 universe. Our main character is David Martinez, a resident of Night City and a student at the prestigious Arasaka Academy. Night City is a futuristic city where practically every modern technology has been changed and updated. He lives only with his mom who works hard to keep him in this expensive school despite their financial struggle. David struggles a lot in school due to his prowess for technology which makes him somewhat of an outcast in his class. Lots of crime happens in this city and that is what leads to his mother’s death to kick off the story of the show. You’ll quickly discover from watching that Night City is a horrible place filled with crime that never has a good ending.
David’s mother’s death is a significant turning point in his life. When his mother dies as a result of the family’s inability to pay for better healthcare, this shows how truly rotten the city is. David is suddenly made an orphan after she deteriorates in the hospital without even being allowed to see his mother in her final moments. After the death, David begins getting into trouble. One of his classmates starts an altercation with him and beats him severely telling him to leave the school. When he arrives home that night he begins to realize how much he is struggling financially and this leads him into more trouble and to a ripperdoc who is someone that sells and installs body enhancements. David’s mother made a lot of money by selling cybernetic enhancements under the table and David decides to use it for himself and it just so happens the part she left behind is one of the best enhancements out there.
David acquiring this piece is what really helps the story take off and pretty much guides it up until the end. Although it might initially appear to be a plot device, this story’s pacing ends up being quite good for a ten-episode series. Though it’s not by much, the first episode feels the slowest because in the other episodes something is always happening. The show has tons of action and not to mention is animated by one of the best animation studios, TRIGGER. TRIGGER. They have made many other popular anime like Kill la Kill and Akame ga Kill. The studio does an excellent job of capturing the action and bringing the show to life. The soundtrack of the show also came as a nice surprise as it used music from the game and the songs seemed to fit the show perfectly. I recommend that you watch Cyberpunk: Edgerunners because it has a fantastic plot overall. I think that it has something for everyone, and I believe it’s more than enough to at least get you interested in what it’s about. Nowadays, everyone has Netflix, so when you get home, be sure to check out Cyberpunk: Edgerunners!
