A guide to having the best treat basket this Halloween
With the arrival of the spookiest holiday of the year, the excitement to wear pajamas to school, put on your biggest and coziest jacket, and the urge to trick or treat come right back when you feel that cold fall air. Most people would agree that the best part of Halloween is the fun of trick-or-treating; whether you’re out with your friends or by yourself, there’s no denying the excitement of getting a bag full of sweet treats! However, it makes you wonder: what exactly is the best candy to get?
Well, according to the masses, one candy to avoid is Circus Peanuts, voted as America’s most hated candy, according to Spoon University. On the opposite side of the spectrum, America’s most loved candy is Snickers, according to In the Kitchen with Matt.
With 50 different people participating in a poll here at OM, we asked them for their top five favorite candies. Skittles ended up being first, with 36 people voting it as their favorite. That’s 72 percent! In a close second, Reese’s took the number two spot, with 32 votes as a favorite candy. Number three ended up being Nerds Gummy Clusters, with 27 votes. With 25 votes, Nerds came in at the number 4 favorite. Number 5, the last on this list, was Airhead Sour Strips with 17 votes.
With Skittles being the most popular candy at Oaklands Mills, many, such as Charles Sorenson, describe it as “the perfect amount of sugar and the texture feeling very good in your mouth, making you want more.” Oakland Mills’ least liked candy was Almond Joy. With numerous people who are allergic to almonds, making the candy an instant turn-off, people also describe it as “too sweet with a bark type of texture.” Many claim that coconut and chocolate should not be a combo, with the texture and the taste being a weird type of sweet, Sophomore Jake Kopasz claims.
Despite Skittles being number one at OM, it turns out Dolle’s Sea Salt Water Taffy is Maryland’s most popular candy! Dolle’s Candyland was created in 1906 in Ocean City, Maryland, and can be most commonly found in Ocean City’s Candy Kitchens. They are recognized by their big colorful boxes with a logo of a sun with a face on them.
It’s interesting to see how different people like different candy, and how the way or area you grew up in can influence your tastes. Get out there and try to fill up as many bags of candy as you can, and Happy Halloween!
