Due to virtual learning, you may not know that we have a brand new art teacher this year, Ms. Alexis Irby. Although she is new to our staff, she is not new to our school since she is actually an OM graduate! Although she didn’t necessarily plan to be back at OM, we are certainly excited to welcome her hOMe.
After graduating from OM, Ms. Irby attended Towson University to pursue her degree. She began her career at Gwynns Falls Elementary School which is located in Baltimore. She taught there for two years before returning to Howard County.
Ms. Irby recognizes the challenges of online learning saying, “it’s not ideal because it is harder to connect with people.” However, she does see the positive in that she has become much more familiar with the various digital platforms. As for art, Ms. Irby believes that the subject is a great way for students to express themselves and use their creativity. On the other hand, she understands that many people can be self conscious about their perceived artistic ability, which can make her job more challenging.
Outside of school, Ms. Irby likes to spend her free time going on walks, hiking, and swimming when the weather is nice. She also enjoys travelling, and has been to England, Scotland, Spain, and Canada. She has six pets, including: two rabbits, two cats, and two dogs. Her favorite foods are different kinds of fruits, and her favorite colors are purple and green (green because it reminds her of nature). Her passions include working together to make the world a better place and taking care of the environment.
We are happy to have her back as a part of the Oakland Mills Community where we are strongest together. Welcome, Ms. Irby!
